Akoumia
A few words about the village...
The village of Akoumia with a population of approximately 900 is directly alongside the main road connecting Rethymnon and Agia Galini. Passing by one sees the bakery and coffee shop-taverna alongside the road. The buildings lining the road all look fairly modern. However once you turns off and enter the town there is a completely different village to be seen. Many ancient buildings, a shaded village square which is the hub of activity at all hours and generally it is a tight squeeze to get by or find a parking spot much to the amusement of the locals. There are several coffee shops, a pastry shop and tavern. In addition to this the travelling salesmen pass by frequently and one can buy any other normal household requirements from them. The village itself has a traditional taverna which operates all year round and is alongside and ancient castle like building dating back to the time when the Turks occupied Crete. It is only about 10 mins drive from Spili where most services are available. The nearest beaches are the beautiful beaches of Akoumia and Triopetra where there are also several excellent tavernas which operate during the summer months and are very popular.
