Zaros
A few words about the village...
The picturesque village of Zaros known for its spring water which is bottled and sold all over Crete. It is an area of great natural beauty and a walkers paradise. Above the village is the wonderful gorge of Rufus, which attracts trekkers during the tourist season. There is a small lake at the foothills of Mount Idi on the edge of the village with several trout tavernas offering superb meals. The village has all the necessary amenities for every day life which include Banking, a health centre, post office, pharmacy and supermarket. There are many shops selling traditionally made items including lyres, local herbs and teas etc. It has an abundance of good restaurants and coffee shops. The altitude is 340m above sea level, which makes it pleasant during the very hot summer months and makes year round gardening a rewarding pleasure. The nearest large town of Mires is only 10kms It is just under an hours drive to Heraklion (45 kms). There is a regular bus service to Heraklion and Mires.
