Kalamaki
A few words about the village...
Kalamaki is a simple sea side resort with a string a tavernas and bars along the waters edge. Behind this nestled on the sand dunes on higher ground are some surprisingly expensive homes. It has the comfortable feel of a relaxed and laid back resort with the most wonderful sandy beach, and on windy days there is more surf than in most other parts of the Bay of Messera. The village itself is very well promoted on the internet and it is one of the first road signs one sees as one exits the airport in Heraklion! Despite they way it has developed there is a certain charm about the village, there is a square with a kafenion, a car rental company, kiosk several hotels and rent rooms establishments and everything else that one would deem necessary for a regular small resort. What is special about Kalamaki is certainly its beach and the friendly service in the water front bars and tavernas. It is close to the towns of Timbaki and Mires which have a large variety of shops and services. It is also close to the main road to Herkalio and of course is close to the Minoan site of Phaestos. There are beautiful views out to the Paximathia islands and one can enjoy spectacular sunsets as the sun sets across the bay.
