| Zaros is a picturesque village located at the southern slope of the mountain IDI (Psiloritis) at 340m a.s.l, 45 km from Iraklion It has 2,241 permanent residents.The main occupation of the inhabitants is farming and stock breeding, while there are quite a few traditional workshops of weaving, painting (icons), and musical instruments. Zaros is also famous for it’s beautiful drinking water and there is a bottling plant near the village. It also has a number of trout farms and a lake with is very scenic. Above the village is the wonderful gorge of Rufus, which attracts trekkers during the tourist season. There is the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, at the mouth of the gorge of Agios Nikolaos.This gorge provide great climbing trails. The E4 European Climbing Route crosses the village. This is a large village and has a police station, post office, doctor's office, and pharmacy along with all the other shops selling necessities for every day life. There are some very good restaurants and tavernas and a host of cafe-neos. Zaros also has a museum for a working flour mill where one can see the mill in action and if you happen to visit while the caretaker is grinding flour you can purchase some from him. There is a regular bus service to Heraklion and Mires the nearest market town. |
