SIVAS Situated at a distance of 62 kilometres far from Heraklion at the Southwest, not far from the road to Matala, Sivas is a beautiful small traditional inland village of 400 permanent residents, listed by the Ministry of Culture as a traditional village with conservation status; it has interesting stone buildings with carved blazons and arched doors; it is famous for the cultivation of various high quality agricultural products, mainly olive trees. It is the birthplace of the greek author Themos Cornaros. This is a very tradition village with some beautiful architecture and many of the old Venetian houses have been restored. It is surrounded by olive groves and has views to the Psiloritis mountains. The massara plan is rich in agriculture and this gives it a lovely country feel . There is a central platia which hosts some really good restaurants and tavernas, a butcher, mini-market and pottery shop and the school and church are also near the platia. It is located close to many important archaeological sites including festos, agia triada, gortes and the site at komos beach. It is only a short distance to two of the main market towns in this region and also close to several unspoilt beaches including Komos, and Kalamaki. About 25 percent of the population of Sivas are foreigners who have made their home there. It is a very friendly community and during the summer there are evenings where the locals have Greek dancing in the square. This is a nice area to set up home if you like company. There are various classes available close by including Yoga, Dancing, Language classes etc.,
