CARNIVALS AND CAROBS

It's been an exceptional winter. Crete, set in the south east corner of the Mediterranean normally enjoys exceptionally mild, dry and sunny winters especially on the south coast. This year is different and we have experienced cooler and duller days than most of the elders can remember, but its all relative so we shouldn't really complain.

I think that the gardens and countryside flowers and herbs will appear later than usual, but the extra rain will give us a magical show of spring flowers and herbs. However when it comes to Carnival there is no stopping the enthusiasts. Even if the cooler weather continues the teams will get their floats and costumes ready and be partying on the Grand Parade on Sunday 26th. I find it a real shame and unfortunate that the Greek authorities have never promoted winter tourism or winter festivals. I had never heard of Greek Carnivals until I came to live in Crete. The size, effort and carnival spirit is fantastic when you take the size of the country and its population into account.

As usual the biggest carnival in Crete will be in Rethymnon city and the main day and celebrations take place on Sunday the 26th. However it is really 3 weeks of partying when everyone over indulges in everyway ahead of Lent which starts the day after Carnival.

There is a full 3 week program and while one is at first astonished at the prices parents are prepared to pay for costumes, the children will wear them for almost 3 weeks to every party and fancy dress. Most adults will dress for their local carnival party, in the case of Agia Galini it will be held in the old school on the 25th and starts at 7p.m. It is absolutely great to go to carnival and see who dresses as what and it is a no holds barred event. Greek men whom you would never dream would be up for it, will be in fishnet stockings and high heels. Being in disguise truly liberates one. Do give it a go!

The full details of the festivities organised for Rethymnon can be seen by clicking here.

Now onto the Carobs. These extremely hardy evergreen trees can be grown in the toughest and most challenging conditions. In addition they produce an abundance of carob beans. Carob has long been considered a healthy substitute for chocolate and can be used in its powdered form in baking instead of cocoa. I have always imagined one would need a hammer-mill machine to grind up the carob beans which are really tough. After being treated to a carob syrup served with yogurts and fruits, I was told that they are soaked, leached and softened in a procedure not unlike curing olives and anyone who had a supply of carob beans could easily do this. While the syrup did not taste exactly like chocolate it was a distinctive flavour which was something like a mixture of a caramel syrup and chocolate, but entirely natural and good for one. So it's a sinful treat with far less calories and fats. There are some enterprising locals who have set up a business distributing carob products. They have recipes on their website and their range of products. There are some really interesting products and alternative uses for this healthy product which ranges from syrup to powder also a cocoa substitute and one which is sold as an alternative to coffee. The prices are very reasonable, enough to encourage one to order some products and enjoy them.

Finally, onto business; we have some interesting properties and some bargains which have become available. While prices have held steady in the south, some foreign owners from outside the Euro zone, now find that they can afford to sell at a lower price. Below are a few properties which we would recommend:
