Having recently visited a number of Cretan families I once again realised how incredibly generous they are. It is amazing that they give so generously and that it is so difficult to give anything back. If you visit on a name day with an appropriate gift of a box of wrapped cakes from the Zaxaraplastio (Cake shop) or a plant, flowering Gardenias or Azaleas are particularly welcome, you will return home with more than you took. Even when just visiting for a moment you will be given something, an orange from their tree or herbs which are quickly picked in the garden or open field, a mini bouquet of fresh herbs. This time of the year you can have a selection of these herbs within minutes of stepping out of your car alongside almost any road. At the moment the new sping growth on sage, thyme, oregano and even a form of mint is plentyful and pungent . Camomile is in flower in the lower lying warm areas, just look for a carpet of tiny white flowers usually directly alongside the road. I have not seen the well known Diktamo commonly called Mountain tea, growing low down, it generally thrives on higher and cooler mountain slopes. There are some sellers who come to town once a year selling this tea and if you come across someone calling out and selling it, do buy some. When you approach him, the smell of the herb is so strong and fresh and unlike anything you will find in the usual supermarkets or tourist shops. Infusions have become a popular alternative to to tea and coffee and even the trendy coffee shops in the cities in Crete offer some of these alternatives which are caffiene free and have many healing properties and its all free in the fields at the moment. You can make tea with the fresh herbs or dry them for use for the rest of the year. Many, like thyme, can be picked fresh all year round, Crete is covered in a mantle of thyme and on a windy day in summer you can smell it in the air. We are into Lent which is something which most people still follow to some degree especially during the first and last week. This is a progressive deprivation of certain foodstuffs. Fortunately alcohol is not included in the items prohibited. It is a time of the year, which is generally quieter and marriages do not take place during this time. We do have one official holiday day which we celebrate and that is the Greek Independence Day on the 25th March. This is to celebrate the start of the revolution in 1821 to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) after 400 years of occupation. AstonishinglyCrete only gained its independence almost 80 years later. This is also the date on which the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary is celebrated and Evangelia and Evangelos celebrate their name days. Greek calendars do not usually show bank holidays and any unknowing person can end up planning a trip to the city and find everything closed. I find the small block tear off calendar a useful item, to keep one informed of all the Saints days and holidays as well as phases of the moon and official time of sunrise and sunset and goodness knows what else. They can usually be bought for around 1.50€ and its money well spent. At the moment almond trees with their pink blossoms are prominent in the lush green countryside alongside the white blossoms of the wild pears and all this over a carpet of blue anemones. What can I say, I love Crete and it is absolutely beautiful at any time of the year. Property wise, it is suprisingly busy with enquiries and the upper end of the market is particularly bouyant, but there are new properties coming on to the market in all categories so hopefully you will find your dream property this year.
