MARVELLOUS MAY with LOCAL & GARDENING NEWS
CRETE4ME ESTATE AGENCY OFFICE: CENTRAL AGIA GALINI - South Crete. MAY 2008 NEWSLETTER The May Day celebrations (1st May) has everyone out picking spring flowers and tying them onto their cars. They stick them under the wiper blades, number plates and tie them onto the aerials etc. Everyone is in fine spirits and hooting and waving at friends and family. The intention is to find a superb picnic spot out in the countryside and have a picnic. What a wonderful way to start the month – with a public holiday! The weather during May can be a bit uncertain, but the days are sunny and vary from warm to hot although the evenings can sometimes be a bit cool. Weather wise, I always think that this is a good time to wade ones way through the local markets which are held in every major town and city. It is still mild enough to be able to spend several hours looking through all the goods on offer. Many Greeks, still shop mainly in the market place for everything from coffee cups to formal clothing. There are many bargains to be had and for a few euros you can have an enormous amount of fun. On the bargain tables on can find a selection of party outfits, bikinis or copies of designing shoes, handbags and sunglasses. Genuine leather belts makes good presents and there certainly is something for everyone in the family. Of course if you visit the fresh produce end of the market, everyone comes away with too much to eat in a week, but you will enjoy the enthusiasm of the stall holders. The market usually has a section of plants and cut flower sellers too. It is a good time to be buy basil plants. There will be several varieties on offer and the one with the smallest leaves will give you the perfectly round bush that everyone admires later in the year. I was surprised to find that Greeks do not use basil the cooking and it is not sold at the fruit and vegetable stalls. It is used by the priests who dip a branch into holy water and splash it on the faithful at certain services and also when visiting a house for a blessing. News from our garden - we have once again got Blue Tits in the nesting boxes and it with great joy that we sit out under our vine and watch the parents making repeated trips all day long to feed the chicks. From experience we know there are only a few days to go before they leave the nests, but they will continue to visit the feeder for most of the year and are so tame we can sit in close proximity to them without disturbing them.
